CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR

Virginia paced the lounge, wondering how much longer Callan would be out. It had already been over an hour.

It wasn’t long for them to run, but she was still worried. Maybe because she was unsettled after hearing about the men from next door visiting, even if they were mere humans.

Or was it because, the moment Callan had run off, she’d felt an emptiness within her?

Like a damn lovesick puppy.

“Stupid,” she muttered to herself.

“You ready?” Sage asked, stepping into the living room.

“What? Oh, yes,” she said, turning from the window and glancing at the clock. “I apologize. I forgot the time.”

Ginny said she would meet Sage twenty minutes ago, if the time was correct.

“Don’t worry. Ari phoned me as he boarded the jet.” Sage grinned. “Wait until you’re mated. It’s so hard being apart.”

So she kept hearing. And honestly, it felt like that right now.

“How does it feel?” she asked. It wasn’t like she hadn’t heard this all her life. Vampire mating was just the same as humans marrying.

They walked down to the room Sage had turned into a pop-up science lab, and Ginny took a seat in a big armchair and pulled up her sleeve.

“Well, it’s hard to put into words,” Sage said, grabbing her needles and tubes. “Have you ever lost someone you love?”

Ginny nodded.

She sure had. All of them. Her entire family in one night. Her mother, her father, and her twin sister.

The worst night of her life.

It was like her heart and soul had been torn out of her. Ginny had lost herself for a long time, and while she was piecing life back together now, she still didn’t feel completely whole yet.

“Yes. It’s very painful,” she said, instead of going into detail.

“It’s like that moment when you know, but don’t one hundred percent know, they are gone. Like you are hanging on with hope and a prayer and feel like you need to run as fast as you can back to them.”

“God. That sounds horrible.”

Sage shot her a look and nodded.

“I feel like I’ve been deep breathing for days to stay calm,” she said. “Talking on FaceTime helps. But then I cry, and Ari threatens to fly out.”

Ginny watched the needle go into her arm.

“How amazing to be loved like that,” she said dreamily. It was what she wanted, even though it sounded like an emotional prison in some respects. “You are blessed.”

Sage’s face spread into a grin. “Yes. I am. He’s an incredible male. We’re getting married next month.”

Virginia smiled.

She’d only been awake a few hours but had already heard. It was rare for a vampire couple to marry—not unheard of, but rare—so there was a lot of buzz.

“You were human before Ari turned you?” Ginny asked, making the assumption because that was usually the case.

Sage nodded.

“Now, speaking of bonds. Aside from learning how the sunlight has impacted both you and Callan, I am here to understand all aspects of wolves. Mind, body, and soul, you could say. Tell me about the bond between wolves,” Sage said.
